The 8 Ways to Boost Self-Esteem

People are their own harshest critics. This is no secret, especially to those of us who are in school or maintaining our careers. We often find ourselves in bouts of self-doubt and most of these are caused by low levels of self-esteem.

A lot of people have low self-esteem and to many, it is an ongoing mental battle. It is one of the most tedious mental battles there is and it often takes years to eradicate. Some days are good, but most days are simply difficult. It has even become hindrances to some from pursuing opportunities that could have pushed them forward in life.

  • Practice mindfulness. It would be doubly difficult to address problems with self-esteem if you don’t recognize that there is a problem. You have to make yourself aware of the negative things you tell yourself. If you don’t, you are more likely to spiral into believing them.

  • Rewrite the story. Whatever negative idea you have about yourself, you have to change it. You have to rewrite the self-deprecating stories you believe about yourself.

  • Never compare your progress with others. Somebody may already be in chapter 35 of their lives while you are in chapter 2, but remember, they were in your place once, too.

  • Recognize your strengths. Are you good at something? Cooking, perhaps? Playing music? Then you should focus on that and be confident.

  • Practice self-care. Exercising regularly, eating right, and getting enough sleep have been shown to have positive effects on one’s self-perception.

  • Help out others. Try spending a day where you are simply emitting positivity towards anyone you meet and towards anything you do. You can offer help to others with whatever they need help with and simply enjoy the good feeling that doing these things can bring you.

  • Let go of feelings of bitterness and forgive others. This may be one of the hardest to do on the list, but it is essential. Holding on to feelings of anger and bitterness may only bring your self-esteem down.

  • Remind yourself that you are not your failures. It will be difficult at first, but you have to remember that your failures do not make up the person that you have worked so hard to build. This will take the most time, but eventually, as long as you keep at it, you’ll soon begin to see days filled with contentment and happiness.

In the battle against low self-esteem, the best thing to do is to practice self-compassion. Never forget to be kind to yourself. You may be your harshest critic, but it does not mean that you can’t be your own best friend.
