Overcoming a Negative Self-Image: How to Be Kinder to Yourself

Group of students

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?” – Marianne Williamson

You’re funny, smart, and kind. You have countless ideas that could help others. You have stories to share that could inspire the people around you.

However, something stops you from doing all of these.

Something tells you that maybe you aren’t good enough and that your ideas and opinions don’t actually matter. Something prevents you from sharing your thoughts. There’s this nagging feeling that maybe, you aren’t worthy of success, love, and happiness.

If low self-esteem if preventing you from living your life to the fullest, Align To Enlighten is here to help. We are experienced life coaches in Orange County California and we endeavor to help you overcome any negative perceptions that you have about yourself.

Overcoming a negative self-image isn’t easy; however, here are some key reminders from our experts:

  • Allow yourself to make mistakes.

Nobody is perfect. As cliché as it sounds, the fact of the matter is that everybody makes mistakes. The difference lies in how people see them. Some see mistakes as a tragedy that they can’t overcome. Others, see them as opportunities for learning and growth. One viewpoint can negatively impact your self-esteem, while the other can help you become a better person. Which sounds like the better option for you?

  • Stay true to yourself.

It is only natural to want approval from your family and peers. However, if you find yourself pretending to be someone that you’re not just to please others, know that you are only putting yourself down. Instead of pretending, stay true to yourself. Letting go of your pretenses and truly accepting yourself can pave the way to a much healthier self-esteem.

  • Help others.

No amount of success or fortune can give you the same sense of purpose or gratification as getting a genuine “thank you” from someone you’ve helped. When you help others, no matter how small or big that act may be, your sense of self-worth and self-esteem can get a boost. Volunteer, sponsor a child in need, join a charity – just help whenever, however you can.
